Christmas is not only one of the most significant holidays in the Christian church tradition but also one of the most revered celebrations for Ukrainians. This is likely why it has accumulated numerous signs and superstitions that are passed down from generation to generation. UNN has gathered for you the most common ones, but whether to adhere to these superstitions and trust in omens is entirely up to you.

In many regions of Ukraine, it was believed that the first person to enter the house on Christmas should be a man, preferably dark-haired, as this was thought to herald success in the coming year.

It is considered that on Christmas Eve and the holiday itself, one should not engage in work or household chores (except for preparing the festive dinner). However, many believe that working for pleasure, even on such a holiday, is not a sin.

There is a superstition that taking out the trash on Christmas might also mean taking out luck or harmony from the family. Therefore, some prefer not to dispose of garbage during these festive days.

Another warning is to avoid arguments and quarrels. This prohibition applies to all church holidays, and it is believed that such behavior can bring misfortune. Overall, conflicts and foul language are not only inappropriate on ordinary days but can also lead to problems.

During the holidays, we usually enjoy wearing beautiful clothes, while our ancestors believed that donning a new outfit would attract prosperity to its owner. Ideally, the clothing should be light in color.

Our ancestors did not forget about livestock on Christmas either, treating them as well—this was also meant to promote abundance. What better reason to pamper our beloved pets?

Christmas prohibitions:

- No swimming;

- No haircuts;

- No moving into a new home;

- No slaughtering animals, hunting, or fishing;

- No visiting cemeteries.

It was also considered almost a sin not to try all the dishes on the festive table. Many believe that one must start the dinner with kutya.

At the same time, consuming alcohol on Christmas is not prohibited. Church sacraments such as weddings or baptisms are also not restricted.

A good omen is to visit friends or host guests.

It should be noted that on Christmas (December 25), the 40-day fast comes to an end, meaning those who have been fasting can eat meat and other previously prohibited foods. It is important to remember that one should exit fasting properly and gradually—one should not immediately indulge in meat dishes.

Our ancestors could refrain from eating until the evening meal on Christmas Eve. The dishes prepared for this night were strictly lean, and there had to be 12 of them. To protect against dark forces, a clove of garlic was placed at each corner of the table. The table should be set before the first star appears in the sky. Under the table, the host would usually place hay—a reminder that the Savior was born in a manger. On the corner of the table, they would set a didukh—a symbol of ancestors that dates back to pre-Christian times.

Ukrainians have always held their ancestors in high regard, and on Christmas Eve, they would definitely place a small plate on the table for them, where kutya or, for example, apples could be placed.

Traditionally, dinner should begin with a prayer, and Christmas Day should start with a visit to the church. After that, a festive lunch can be arranged.
