В Тибете произошло землетрясение магнитудой 7,1, в результате которого погибли более 50 человек.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake was recorded in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, near the borders with Nepal and India. Reports indicate that more than 50 people have already lost their lives.

This information comes from RBK-Ukraine, citing the Xinhua news agency.

According to media reports, at least 53 individuals have died as a result of the earthquake, with over 60 others injured. Rescue operations are ongoing at the site, so the number of casualties may rise. About 1,500 firefighters and rescuers have been deployed to search for people trapped under the rubble.

The earthquake has caused significant damage in the region, resulting in substantial material losses.

Seismologists report that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 181 km north of the Indian city of Darjeeling, approximately 87 km northeast of Everest. The earthquake occurred at 09:05 AM local time.

Earthquakes in Tibet

Tibet, located on the Tibetan Plateau, is a seismically active area due to the tectonic processes resulting from the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. This collision created the Himalayas and led to regular earthquakes in the region. Earthquakes in Tibet often have significant magnitude and can cause severe damage to the population and infrastructure, particularly in mountainous areas where landslides and collapses pose additional hazards.

One of the most powerful earthquakes in the region was the 1950 earthquake in Tibet and neighboring Assam (India), which had a magnitude of 8.6. It is one of the strongest earthquakes of the 20th century, leading to numerous casualties and extensive destruction. Subsequently, other powerful seismic shocks were recorded in Tibet, which destroyed buildings, triggered avalanches, and forced local residents to seek temporary shelter.

Earlier, RBK-Ukraine reported that in early December, an earthquake of approximately 7.0 magnitude occurred off the coast of the United States.
