Poland is set to construct a road leading to the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation in the near future. This road will enable Polish troops to respond more swiftly to potential security breaches.
This was stated by the Deputy Head of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Maciej Duszczyk, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing his interview with Financial Times.
According to him, Poland aims to complete the construction of a border wall and close the border with Belarus by next summer. This is a necessary measure to halt the influx of migrants, which Warsaw describes as a hybrid war by Russia.
He also noted that in the coming months, Warsaw will build a new road toward the Kaliningrad region. Duszczyk believes that these measures will bring Poland "as close to 100% border security as possible."
It is worth mentioning that tensions in Poland's relations with Russia and Belarus have escalated following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In particular, Warsaw accuses Minsk and Moscow of deliberately controlling the flow of migrants to exert pressure on the EU.
For this reason, Poland initiated the "Eastern Shield" project, aimed at strengthening the border with Russia and Belarus. The Polish government has allocated 10 billion zlotys for this purpose.
Additionally, the start of construction of fortifications on the border with Russia was announced on November 1. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
