Discussions about the potential deployment of a European peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine in the future are currently premature.

This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing N-tv.

According to Scholz, the issue of deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine was not discussed at the meeting of EU member state leaders in Brussels. He reiterated his opposition to the idea of introducing peacekeeping forces in Ukraine in the event of a possible ceasefire.

He mentioned that a specific organization of the security architecture "cannot be a subject of reasonable discussion at this time."

"But it should be something that we believe also has a transatlantic structure," he emphasized.

Scholz responded that there have been "no discussions about ground troops or anything like that, because that is not an issue at all."

The Issue of Sending Foreign Troops to Ukraine

Discussions about the possibility of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine are ongoing. French President Emmanuel Macron previously suggested considering the deployment of European troops in the event of a freeze in the conflict.

At the same time, in Italy, the Ministry of Defense and the Foreign Ministry stated that Italian troops could join such a mission only after hostilities have ceased. They also emphasized the need to ensure reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.

As reported by Politico, one of the topics for the upcoming meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders on December 18 will be the discussion of a peacekeeping mission.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently noted that Germany is likely to play a role in ensuring a future ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine. However, there are currently no details regarding the format of the peacekeeping forces.

Meanwhile, Reuters learned how many troops the West may send.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine supports the initiative from France to send peacekeepers. Kyiv is urging its partners to join these efforts.
