The head of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Svitlana Hrynchuk, announced on her Facebook page that November 6th is the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
"This day was established in the environmental calendar in 2001. However, it is now, through the lens of Ukraine and our international initiative to assess environmental damage, that the world gains a clear understanding of this issue. Russia's war against Ukraine threatens the life of the entire continent. Our methodologies and calculation results speak volumes in terms of numbers and facts: 6,500 recorded instances of environmental damage due to hostilities, $71 billion in ecological damage, the catastrophe at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station, and a loss of 14 cubic meters.
The minister also notes that all of Ukraine hopes for the day when we can finally conclude these horrifying calculations.
"Every day these numbers increase, as the war continues. We hope for the day when experts can work across all Ukrainian territories, including those currently under occupation, and when we can finalize these assessments. For now, we are doing everything possible to ensure that environmentalists around the world remain focused on the environmental issues during wartime, not just today but all 365 days of the year," – concludes Svitlana Hrynchuk.
