In Kharkiv, a group from the Russian GRU was neutralized after they detonated a vehicle belonging to a Ukrainian soldier and planned further attacks.

The Security Service of Ukraine has neutralized an agent-combat group of the Russian military intelligence, more commonly known as the GRU, in Kharkiv. Members of this group were involved in terrorist acts in the frontline city and were spying on Ukrainian military units.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the press service of the SBU.

One of the most notorious crimes committed by the group was the bombing of a Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier's vehicle in June of this year. The perpetrators tracked the location where the defender of Ukraine parked his car in Kharkiv and planted an improvised explosive device beneath it. As a result of the explosion, the soldier sustained serious injuries.

The agent-combat group consisted of four local residents: a software engineer, a former military personnel, and two unemployed individuals. Their activities were coordinated by a militant from the "DPR special forces," who is engaged in combat operations against Ukraine in the east and works for the Russian GRU.

After the explosion of the Ukrainian soldier's vehicle, the group received instructions to prepare for the next terrorist act. The criminals manufactured another explosive device and attempted to conceal it in a specially equipped hideout. At the same time, they were tasked with derailing a train transporting military equipment for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The SBU counterintelligence documented all the group's crimes. During a special operation, all four members were detained. One of them was caught "in the act" in a wooded area while trying to hide a box of explosives. The others were apprehended at their residences. During the searches, explosive substances, mobile phones, and computer equipment containing evidence of their illegal activities were seized.

All detainees have been notified of suspicion under part 2 of Article 111 (treason committed in a state of war) and part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Additionally, the issue of further qualifying the crimes under Articles 113 (diversion) and 258 (terrorist act) is being considered.

The criminals are currently in custody. They face life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
