The United States has announced the elimination of "Islamic State" leader Abu Yusuf during an airstrike in Syria. The operation took place on December 19.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the U.S. Central Command on Twitter.

The American agency stated that the ISIS leader was eliminated as a result of a "precision airstrike" in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor. Another terrorist was also neutralized in the operation.

"The strike occurred in an area that was previously controlled by the Syrian regime and Russians," the statement said.

According to CENTCOM Commander General Michael Eric Kurilla, the airstrike was part of the U.S. efforts to prevent the resurgence of "Islamic State" amid the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria.

"As previously stated, the United States - working with allies and partners in the region - will not allow ISIS to exploit the current situation in Syria and resume its activities," he said.

The Fall of Assad's Regime in Syria

Earlier, we reported that large-scale clashes began in Syria between the Islamist rebel group "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham," units of the Syrian National Army, and the army of dictator Bashar al-Assad. This led to the overthrow of Assad's regime.

Additionally, earlier, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin expressed concern that the international terrorist organization "Islamic State" might take advantage of the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria.
