The list of territorial communities complying with the Eco-Inspection’s requirement to compensate for damage caused to forests not allocated for use due to illegal logging on community land is expanding. Consequently, the awareness of their responsibility for committed violations is becoming the norm for local government bodies.

In August 2024, a temporary commission consisting of representatives from the Polesie District Environmental Inspection, the Korets City Council, the “Kostopol Forestry” branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine,” the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Rivne Regional State Administration, and the Northwest Interregional Management for Spring, Rechino, Storozhi, Ustya, and Morozovka discovered illegal logging of 287 trees of various species on forestry reserve lands under the jurisdiction of the Korets City Council.

The individuals responsible for these tree cuttings have not been identified.

Guided by Articles 20-2, 68, 69 of the Law of Ukraine “On Environmental Protection,” Article 69, Clause 2 of Article 105, Clause 2 of Article 107 of the Forest Code of Ukraine, Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Plant World,” and Article 222 of the Ukrainian Code, the Polesie District Environmental Inspection proposed to the Korets City Council to compensate the state for damages incurred from illegal logging in the amount of 1,366,714 UAH 33 kopecks within one month.

The Inspection officially reported that the specified funds have been transferred to a special account in the local budget.

“The fact that the Korets City Council voluntarily complied with the requirement to compensate for damages due to illegal logging on lands under its jurisdiction, without involving judicial authorities, indicates an awareness of responsibility for the environmental state in its territory and serves as an incentive for local government bodies across Ukraine to properly fulfill their delegated authorities in controlling the use and protection of natural resources and forest regeneration,” stated Yevhen Medvedovskyi, head of the Polesie District Environmental Inspection.
