It is still unclear how many Russian military personnel were in Syria. It is likely that the contingent consisted of several thousand troops.
This was stated by military expert Ivan Stupak in a comment on the YouTube channel RBK-Ukraine.
According to the expert, there are indeed concerns that the Russian Federation may transfer its air component from Syria to Ukraine. However, the exact number of these troops is not known.
"There is such concern. Look, there is no reliable data on how many were in Syria, but there are some very isolated figures. For example, regarding personnel. I have seen publications about 2,000 to 4,000, with a maximum of 7,500 people mentioned as the RF contingent in Syria. But we remember that they did not operate on the ground; they worked more with 'precision strikes' and 'precision weapons,'" says Stupak.
He explained that the Russians who were in Syria primarily operated from the air. These are pilots, as Syria reportedly had 20 aircraft and about 10 helicopters.
"So I assume, my personal assumption, that this is precisely an air component that will go to the Ukrainian fronts and reinforce the RF. This is not about stormtroopers. Although, they could send all the stormtroopers right away. This is not a problem for the RF at all," the expert emphasized.
He also noted that Russia likely managed to negotiate with Turkey for a corridor to move its equipment. But this is a very quick corridor to evacuate aviation and helicopters.
"I don’t know how they will manage to transport the S-300, S-400 systems, whether they will be able to evacuate them," the expert stressed.
In November, large-scale combat clashes began in Syria between the Islamist group "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" and the Syrian National Army, alongside the army of dictator Bashar Assad, who was supported by Russia and Iran.
Reuters reported that Turkey was aware in advance of the rebels' plans to overthrow Assad's regime.
Additionally, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the overthrow of dictator Bashar Assad's regime is a moment of joy for Syria. However, it also represents a period of uncertainty for the locals and the entire region.
Moreover, the publication Defense Express calculated whether Syria has weapons that Ukraine could use and how it might be obtained.
