At the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, efforts to mitigate the consequences of the recent drone strike have resumed. New smoldering hotspots have been discovered there.
According to RBK-Ukraine, this was announced by the State Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone on Facebook.
"Work to extinguish the fire has resumed: three smoldering hotspots have been recorded. Two teams of climbers, each consisting of four members, are currently working there, while a third team is being deployed for partial opening of the shelter structures and extinguishing the smoldering spots," the statement reads.
Currently, working lines have been laid on five shafts, and the situation is being monitored using drones equipped with thermal imaging. A total of 91 personnel from the State Emergency Service and 18 units of equipment have been involved.
No deterioration in the radiation situation at the NPP site and the overall Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has been recorded. No radioactive substances have been detected beyond the established limits.
At the same time, the State Emergency Service has released new photos and videos from Chernobyl.
"Currently, three teams of climbers are conducting partial openings of the shelter structures and extinguishing three smoldering spots in the roof insulation," the message states.
On Friday, February 14, the Russian army launched a drone strike on the sarcophagus at Chernobyl. It is known that the drone was equipped with a high-explosive warhead and was flying at an altitude of 85 meters, which prevented radar detection.
According to the State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone, the consequences of the attack could have been catastrophic if the drone had hit just 15 meters off the target.
It was previously reported that firefighting efforts at Chernobyl had been suspended. Monitoring of the situation continues with the help of a drone.
It was also reported that as a result of the enemy drone attack on February 14, some equipment in the new safe confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant remains without power.
